Building Sustainable Health, Science, and Food Systems for Myanmar
Although our professional training was in medicine, we quickly realized that improving public health required more than clinical practice alone—it required
systems, infrastructure, and long-term commitment.
In the early 2000s, together with friends, we began our entrepreneurial journey by investing small amounts of shares to establish a small business focused
on self-testing medical devices such as glucometers, along with basic pharmaceuticals. This marked the beginning of a journey that has now spanned more
than two decades and evolved into four integrated businesses serving healthcare, science, industry, and food safety
Early Growth and Strategic Shifts
As the country began investing in scientific education and laboratory infrastructure, particularly to upgrade post-graduate programs, our early company
successfully participated in numerous government tenders for scientific and laboratory equipment. This period marked our first deep engagement with
scientific instrumentation and quality systems.
However, international sanctions imposed on our country later forced a shift in government priorities. As a result, we redirected our focus back to
pharmaceutical distribution, establishing nationwide sales and distribution teams.
During this time, I also started to recognize a major gap in local healthcare capabilities. Many Myanmar patients were traveling abroad—primarily to
Singapore—for advanced medical treatment. This led me to represent Parkway Hospitals Singapore, one of the region’s leading hospital groups, and to
establish a medical and laboratory referral service connecting Myanmar patients with high-quality care overseas.
Founding Nanova Co., Ltd (2008)
Despite political uncertainty, I strongly believed that scientific testing, quality control, and laboratory infrastructure would become essential for
Myanmar’s future—particularly as an agricultural country rich in natural resources and strategically located between China and India.
With this conviction, I founded Nanova Co., Ltd in 2008
From the outset, Nanova was built on:
- Careful selection of reputable international manufacturers
- Direct engagement with principals
- Long-term investment in people, training, and service quality
I personally invested in overseas training for our engineers, application specialists, and sales teams. Over time, Nanova earned the trust of global
suppliers and was appointed as the exclusive distributor for Myanmar by many leading manufacturers.
I subsequently exited the earlier pharmaceutical partnership to focus fully on Nanova’s long-term growth.
Expansion and Diversification (2010–2016)
Following the formation of an elected government in 2010, international relations improved and public investment increased significantly in education, healthcare, science, technology, food safety, and environmental protection.
With this conviction, I founded Nanova Co., Ltd in 2008
Nanova expanded into three specialized divisions:
- Nanova Scientific
- Nanova Medical
- Nanova Industrial
These divisions were supported by centralized Procurement & Logistics and Finance departments, with branch offices established in Yangon, Mandalay, and
Nay Pyi Taw.
Between 2013 and 2016, Nanova successfully executed numerous large-scale government and institutional projects, generating multimillion revenues in annual revenue.
Key Achievements
Nanova Scientific
- Analytical , Biotechnological and general laboratory instruments
- Chemicals, reagents, glassware, and lab furniture
- Turnkey laboratory projects with ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation
Nanova Medical
- Complete hospital solutions (25 to 1,000 beds)
- Operating theatres, ICU, emergency units
- Diagnostic imaging, clinical laboratories, specialty departments
- Oxygen plants, backup power systems, and hospital furniture
Nanova Industrial
- Turnkey renovation of a 114 MW gas turbine plant
- Marine coating projects for over 40 vessels
- Training simulators (bridge, engine room, damage control)
- Technical and engineering teaching aids for technological universities and vocational institutes
- Distribution of 3M personal safety products to international investors in Special Economic Zones
Building Local Capability Through Service Excellence (2016–2020)
From 2016 onward, Nanova focused heavily on after-sales service, maintenance, and application training. International experts worked alongside our local
teams, enabling full knowledge transfer.
Today, Nanova’s engineers and specialists are fully capable of delivering pre- and post-sales support independently, without reliance on foreign service
teams.
Centre for Better Living (CBL) – Healthcare with Purpose
To address misconceptions about overseas medical care and to promote better health outcomes, I founded Centre for Better Living Co., Ltd (CBL) in
2014.CBL began as a comprehensive health screening and consultation clinic, driven by my personal frustration with seeing patients arrive too late for
effective treatment.
Key initiatives included:
- Preventive health screening
- Pre-treatment counseling and cost transparency
- Visiting specialist programs from Singapore
- Continuing medical education for local doctors
As a result, many patients shifted from Thailand to Singapore after experiencing the difference in clinical quality and outcomes. CBL successfully redirected
10–20% of quality patients back to Singapore hospitals.
A second CBL clinic was established in Mandalay in 2016.
In 2018, CBL achieved BSI ISO 9001:2015 certification, which remains valid today.
Resilience Through Crisis (2020–2024)
The COVID-19 pandemic and the 2021 government changes severely disrupted all operations. International sanctions, including those affecting Singapore, sharply reduced patient referrals and visiting specialist programs.
Despite these challenges, CBL adapted by:
- Relying on experienced local specialists
- Expanding oncology services in collaboration with leading local oncologists
- Supporting local renal transplant programs through laboratory referrals to Singapore
By 2025, both CBL clinics were fully integrated with Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems, significantly improving workflow, patient care, and clinical
coordination.
CBL is now ready to replicate its model in other major cities when conditions allow.
SciSpec Co., Ltd – Advancing Food Safety (2018)
Recognizing systemic weaknesses in food safety enforcement and laboratory accountability, I founded SciSpec Co., Ltd in 2018
SciSpec provides:
- Microbiological and chemical testing services
- Support for local food producers and exporters
- Reliable, independent quality assurance
Today, SciSpec serves approximately 200 regular clients and is preparing for ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation, positioning it among the most credible laboratories
in Myanmar.
Myanmar Organic Farm (MOF) –Healing nature, feeding future from Farm to Plate
Witnessing the long-term health consequences of unsafe food—including cancer and renal disease—I sought a more fundamental solution. In 2013, I founded Myanmar Organic Farm Co., Ltd (MOF) with a vision of farm-to-plate food safety
Located in Hmawbi, 30 miles from Yangon:
- 375 acres of land were acquired
- 60 acres developed for organic farming
- Remaining land dedicated to reforestation with thousands of hardwood trees
By 2019, MOF received national organic certification and has since grown into a trusted source of safe, organic produce. The farm also serves as a space for
education, family visits, training programs, and reconnection with nature
Our People and Future Commitment
Without family wealth or institutional backing, these businesses were built alongside a dedicated team that has
grown together with me over 20 years.
Today:
- Long-serving staff are members of the Boards of Directors across all four companies
- There is a firm intention to implement employee share ownership once national conditions stabilize
